René Magritte’s oil on glass bottles were the inspiration for my wine bottles. During WWII canvas was not easily available, so he decided to improvise. Magritte painted 30 or so bottles between the early 1940s and the mid-1960s and they are now valued in the hundred thousands of dollars. I viewed some of his bottles displayed in The Fifth Season, an exhibit of his later work at SFMOMA in 2018 and decided to create a new series. Here it is!
